Romantic Paris: Buttes Chaumont park

From the Middle Ages to the 18th century, “The Buttes-Chaumont became the receptacle of all the filth of Paris; a few years ago, there were still rendering plants and garbage dumps there, which spread foul fumes, not only over the neighboring neighborhoods, but over the entire city, depending on the direction of the winds,” reports Adolphe Alphand, the engineer in charge of the park’s design and construction by Baron Haussmann.

Today, the Parc des Buttes Chaumont is one of the largest green spaces in Paris, along with the Bois de Vincennes, the Bois de Boulogne, the Parc de la Villette and the Jardin des Tuileries, which we also recommend you visit. The Buttes Chaumont Park, designed as an English garden, imitates mountain landscapes: rocks, cliffs, torrents, waterfalls, lakes, caves, mountain pastures and belvederes. It offers many charming spaces ideal for a romantic walk as well as a family outing where children will find many points of attraction:

  • Playground
  • Sandboxes
  • Rides and swings
  • Guignol
  • Pony ride

The different areas of the park are very landscaped and offer to those who love walking in the beautiful gardens, a pleasure for the eye and all the senses, apt to build beautiful memories.

Guignol

The Punch Theater is located in the park near the Armand Carrel entrance. This castelet was opened in 1892. Since 2008, it has been run by the Rank family. Baptiste learned the trade with his father Michel-Henri Rank, puppeteer at the Parc Montsouris since 1982. They cultivate the tradition of the Guignol theater, created in Lyon around 1808.

The theater is active from April to mid-October on Wednesdays, Saturdays, Sundays and holidays as well as on certain days of the spring school vacations and every day of the summer vacations. Performances usually take place at 4:30 p.m. except during the summer vacations at 5:00 p.m. The duration of a performance is about 40 minutes. The price is 6 euros per person from 2 years old. It is necessary to check on the website the day of the show if the session is maintained because it is an open air show subject to random weather.

Le Pavillon Puebla – Le Perchoir

The perch is housed in the Puebla Pavilion. This restaurant, which offers a beautiful terrace, says it offers “home-made dishes, made with 70% French products, from a respectful agriculture of the living”. It serves in a pleasant and rather charming setting but do not expect an unforgettable gastronomic moment. In any case, it is not unanimously approved by the customers’ opinions.
